Clyde and Nigel Sowman’s 17 Hectare vineyard is located on the Wairau Valley plains, an ancient dry river bed which has created a prime growing area for great wines, particularly intense aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. They started Organic conversion in 2002 and Nigel is now a recognised authority on Organic viticulture. The wine is named after the 1898 Kiwi New Zealand stamp, which the label is an adaption of, released in the same year that the Walnut tree (from which the estate gets its name) was planted. Described by the winemaker as “quintessentially Marlborough”, this is one of my favourite Sauvignons – but don't let that sway you. The grapes are harvested at night to retain freshness and then undergo a slow temperature-controlled fermentation to extract as much of the classic Marlborough freshness as possible. The aroma is obvious from the glass and is full of lemon, passionfruit and juicy melon, this nose carries through on the palate with tons of lively zesty acidity to add a gorgeous finish.
