The Cultured Couple are Norma and Willie Leahy, a farming couple from Moyvane, Listowel, Co. Kerrry. We were introduced to kefir in 2016 after Willie had a period of ill health. We thought this was a fantastic product and wanted to introduce more people to it. We knew we had the basic ingredient in our own nutritious milk and that Willie had personally benefited from the product. We began our artisanal business in 2017.
Kefir is a fermented milk drink with live cultures which originated in the Caucasus Mountains over 2000 years ago. We make our kefir from kefir grains in the traditional way. Many other commercially available kefirs are not made in this way. Our kefir has a distinctive taste, it is slightly sour, deliciously creamy and refreshing! This farm produced kefir has no additives or preservatives. Our kefir drink won Gold at Blas na hEireann in 2018. Our second product is a strained kefir which is a unique artisanal product winning Best Emerging Artisan Product at Listowel Food Fair 2017. It is proving popular with our customers who compare it to Greek Yoghurt or Natural Yoghurt but with a different taste. Our natural kefir drink also won Best Emerging Product in the Health Products section a new competition at Listowel Food Fair in 2019.
Kefir can be beneficial for the intestinal flora and puts friendly bacteria back into the gut. A healthy gut can influence general health in a positive way. Kefir is also high in protein and calcium and is a source of B vitamin.
