Casa Monte Pio was founded in 1979 by Jose María Martinez; now his grandson Pablo Martinez Gago carries the family tradition as the owner and winemaker. Pablo’s passion lies in the vineyard and he has dedicated himself to organic viticulture and craft wine production. His vineyards are located within walking distance to their family home, in the heart of the Val do Salnés near the Rio Umia.

'The new ‘old school’ style Albariño. Everyone loves Albariño, it’s a fantastically fresh grape variety that sings of summer sun. Since Albariño became ubiquitous on winelists and dubbed the ‘new Sauvignon Blanc’ though, the big commercial wineries in Rias Baixas have been churning out sweeter and sweeter styles that smell of canned pineapples, belying the true potential of the grape. The ‘old’ style has bone-shakingly fresh acidity and a distinctly sea salty finish, a perfect complement to oysters and fresh white fish. ‘Mare’ from Casa Monte Pio is the antidote to commercial Albariño that we all need.
