Their surprisingly delicate, almost fruity flavour and crunchy texture accounts for their worldwide popularity.
A very recent addition to Irish cuisine this new and delicious salad turnip is brought to you by New Leaf Urban Farmers.
Hakurei turnips are versatile enough to pair with just about anything. They're delicious raw, but you can also try shaving them into salads or slaws (very nice with thinly sliced apples or pears). When cooked, they develop a buttery flavour and when roasted at a high temperature their sweetness increases.
The turnip tops (greens) are also delicious and very nutritious. They can also be cooked like an Asian green (stir-fried) or chopped and added to salads.
They're excellent in gratins, stir-fries, soups and veg roasts. They can be braised, fried, glazed and sauteed. Moreover, they can also be pickled. Turnips are an excellent source of Vitamin C, folic acid and fiber as well as vitamins B6 and E.
