Ballymaloe farm

Shanagarry, Midleton

My name is Darren Allen and I've been farming here on the grounds of Ballymaloe here in east cork since i was a boy. Now as the third generation on the family farm we have strived to rear our stock in the simplest way possible. I was approached by my grandmother, Myrtle, who was the founder of Ballymaloe House, to keep some hens because she was not happy with the eggs which were being supplied at the time. She wanted good honest eggs, fed on grain and kept out doors. This has been the farm ethos ever since.
We produce primarily for the house and shop but from time to time we have a surplus that we will offer for sale here on neighbourfood.ie
Eggs from our small flock of outdoor hens, which are farmed to free range standards and enjoy the elements are available intermittently depending on the season.
Bacon and pork from our piggies are kept in small batches, reared on our grassy paddocks. All feed for our pigs is produced on the farm or by our neighbours; so no imported soya or feeds or excessive food miles. Currently we use Frank Murphy in Middleton to slaughter, butcher and cure our meat.

We may have veg from our gardens from time to time.
